BoxMart scoops top industry award with Tiny Rebel Limited Edition multipack

Starpack Gold Award win is “testament to innovative team”

Innovative packaging solutions provider BoxMart has won a prestigious Starpack Gold Award for its work producing the first multipack for Welsh Craft Brewery, Tiny Rebel.

Judges at the Starpack Packaging Industry Innovation Awards praised the design and execution of the Limited Edition Can Pack - commissioned to mark the award-winning drinks company’s 7th birthday – which delivered an impressive opening experience as well as securely holding seven special edition 440ml cans of beer, balloons, pencils and a glass.

“We were already immensely proud of our work on this project, but to win the Starpack Gold Award is a testament to the incredibly innovative team we have here,” said BoxMart Managing Director Jo Offord. “We wanted to ensure that this Limited Edition birthday box was something special and we are thrilled that the judges recognised the combination of design expertise and technical innovation that we brought to the packaging.”

When the award-winning drinks company needed a limited edition pack for its seventh birthday celebration, the brief demanded the pack reflect Tiny Rebel’s distinctive and vibrant branding. The opening experience needed to surprise and delight consumers, as well as fulfil its demanding practical function of firmly holding and protecting its contents.

In summarising why they had named BoxMart Gold Award winners, the judges commented they were impressed by the ‘great design, well executed’ and that ‘appropriate technology (had been) exploited superbly’.

“Tiny Rebel is known for its striking branding and graphics, distinctive product names and willingness to play with flavour to create something totally new,” said Jo. “We delivered a unique pack which reflected the brewery’s innovative nature and strong identity. As this was the brand’s first multipack, we knew it also needed to feature exceptional design and hold both the cans and glass securely during transit, whilst also delivering a memorable opening experience reflective of its celebratory nature. Lastly, the packaging then needed to be resealable and reusable as a collector’s item.”

The BoxMart team collaborated closely with Tiny Rebel, with the process including a design workshop to ensure the final pack reflected their vision. “Constructed from a single piece of corrugated board, the finished pack delivered the high-impact opening experience required, unfolding completely flat to reveal its contents snugly tucked within, without having moved in transit,” explained Jo.

“The design also featured a tab for easy re-sealing, ensuring it could be reused and saved by enthusiasts. The exterior of the finished pack featured the brand’s imagery, printed in bright, bold colours with a gloss finish, to ensure standout.”

Jo said the whole team was thrilled to learn their work had been honoured at the Starpack Awards, the UK’s prestigious annual awards scheme recognising innovation in packaging design and technology which is now in its 60th year.

“This was a fantastic project to demonstrate our expertise and drive to deliver beyond expectations. We moved away from the traditional can multipack design and delivered something unexpected,” said Jo. “In terms of sustainability, the webbed design of the box - a result of its single-sheet construction - significantly increased the packaging’s inherent strength.

"This also meant the pack was considerably more resource efficient, minimising wastage,” she said. “The box was then supplied flat-pack for Tiny Rebel to assemble on-site, also reducing the pack’s overall carbon footprint by optimising the shipping.”

Mo Syed, Tiny Rebel’s Chief Demand Officer said: “We were thrilled with the final product. Having the ability to run a design day and test packs over and over to destruction is what gave us the perfect box. The opportunity to test ideas on site that day meant we knew exactly how certain aspects would work, even before we set out to add our branding and identity. The full team at BoxMart knew exactly what we were after and gave us multiple options to create such a fun pack! Cheers!”
